  • Intel Foundation grant awarded to support the Engineering Education Leadership Institute

  • Launched the Research Catalogue as a link on the Center web site as a biweekly digest of scholarly articles and policy reports of special relevance to our audience, some with commentary.

  • Awarded a 4-month contract to Laufer Green Isaac, a public relations firm, to help brand the Center through placement of 3 Chubin and Malcom-drafted editorials on key issues on which we seek to intervene.

  • Moderated "Graduate School: Good, Bad, and Ugly -- A 'Talk Back' Forum," at the AAAS-Packard Graduate Scholars Program meeting, Monterey, CA.

  • Submitted an informal pre-proposal to NSF/CISE to assist and evaluate the first cohort of BPC (Broadening Participation in Computing) Alliances to be awarded. Invitation pending to proceed with full proposal.

  • Susan Metz represented the Capacity Center at the University of Washington ADVANCE Summer Leadership Workshop for SEM Department Chairs, two days on effective practices in hiring, retaining, and mentoring faculty, and improving the departmental climate for faculty. The purpose was to determine the advisability of the Center offering such a workshop nationally or regionally.

June
  • Designed a brochure, "How's Your STEM Program?" directed to faculty and program administrators, reminding them of the Center's services. Distilling the major lessons of Standing Our Ground, it will be used as a kind of capability statement, mailed to various lists, and distributed at meetings where the Center is represented.

  • Met with the Education Working Group of the NSF Biological Sciences Directorate and subsequently submitted "Assessing Education Initiatives and Impacts in NSF/BIO -- A Proposed Work Plan" to assist in assessing their program investments in education, K-postdoc, and rebalancing the portfolio.

  • Submitted "AAAS Capacity Center Support for the Engineering Education Leadership Institute (EELI)," a proposal for a one-year project to the Intel Foundation. The Capacity Center would provide needs-assessments for five engineering colleges participating in the EELI. Sloan is acknowledged as the source of the Center's cost-sharing.

May
  • Began interviewing for a Center-focused Research Associate, preferably a PhD with staff experience (including science education) on Capitol Hill or in a federal agency.

  • Hosted a half-day overview of the Capacity Center and discussion with prospective partner organizations about the challenges it shares with other human resource development organizations, as well as opportunities for collaboration and expansion.

April
  • Organized and moderated a session, "A Systemic View of the S&T Workforce: From Policy to Institutional Practice to Personal Choice" at the 30th Annual AAAS Science and Technology Policy Forum, Washington, DC, April 2005. An SRO crowd of 150 heard a panel including Anthony Carnevale, Shirley Malcom, and Norine Noonan.

  • Submitted"Growing the Capacity to Support STEM on Campus,"a proposal for a 5-year project to the National Science Foundation, Gender in Science and Engineering Program, Extension Services. (Declined in July.)

February
  • Sloan Foundation awarded in February 2005 the Center an Officer’s Grant to disseminate Standing Our Ground to six sites around the U.S. Application sheets have been posted and continue to be distributed. The report serves as an asset both for marketing the Center and for advising colleagues.

    • Disciplinary Society-Education Association (DSEA) Alliance;
    • Women in Engineering Programs & Advocates Network (WEPAN) Board;
    • American Society for Civil Engineering -- National Capital Section;
    • National Science Board Committee on Education; and
    • Consortium for Institutional Cooperation Diversity Forum.

  • Produced a leave-behind trifold brochure and a FAQs one-pager, both available on the web site and in hard copy.
